GORDON WILLIAM TERNOWETSKY Gordon William
Ternowetsky, age 53, passed away suddenly after a brief illness,
on October 7, 1999, in Prince George, British Columbia. He will
be deeply missed by his loving wife, Carroll; sons, Alexander
and Joseph; parents Doris and Bill (Winnipeg); brother Dennis
and family (Brampton), many members of a large extended
family and a great number of dear friends. Born in Winkler,
Manitoba, Gordon was a dedicated husband and father who
cherished family ties and gave unstintingly to his loved ones.
Recently a Professor of Social Work at the U of Northern B.C.,
he began his prolific career as a sociologist by earning a BA from
the U of Winnipeg, MA from the U of Calgary, and PhD from
La Trobe U in Australia. He authored or co-authored eight
books and over ninety articles on unemployment, poverty and
social welfare, and social work practice, and taught at the U of
Calgary, La Trobe U, and the U of Regina. In his lifelong
commitment to issues of poverty, Gordon's research and
teaching interests took him as a visiting professor to universities
in B.C, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, the
United States, Australia and the Ukraine. He presented at
national and international conferences, and served as an advisor,
board member and consultant to community, provincial and
federal bodies. Many colleagues, graduate and undergraduate
students will remember him as a nurturing and inspiring educator
who became personally involved in their learning. In lieu of
flowers, donations may be sent to the Heart & Stroke
Foundation of Manitoba, 301 - 352 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB,
R3B 2H8, or to the charity of one's choice. Funeral service to be
